HOWARD BRENTON: ‘ANNE BOLEYN’—“RADICALLY REVISIONIST” (REVIEW)

As you might expect, Howard Brenton's new play about Anne Boleyn is no mere picturesque romp on the lines of TV's The Tudors. In fact, it's a radically revisionist work that argues that Anne was more Protestant martyr than sexual predator. It both challenges received wisdom and bulges with theatrical vitality.

‘THE GOOD SOLDIER’ IN BATH, ENGLAND (REVIEW)

While its themes offer a tantalising prospect for stage adaptation, Ford Maddox Ford's 1915 novel also presents the challenge of a non-chronological tale told by an unreliable narrator through a vexing tangle of flashbacks. One of the striking achievements in Matthew Lloyd's stylish production is the reworking of this by playwright Julian Mitchell into something more approachable, without losing the ideas that swirl through the original.

ARTISTIC INTERNSHIP FOR THE PUBLIC THEATER, NYC

Eric Louie is looking for an Artistic Intern for the Public Theater

Artistic Internship

The Artistic Office is responsible for producing the Public Lab program as well as spearheading projects in development for future seasons. This office communicates with all other departments at the theater. 

Responsibilities: Interns work with Artistic Staff on projects in development as well as current shows. Duties include assisting producers on readings and workshops, maintaining departmental databases, general office management and providing support for Artistic Staff and Literary Department as needed. The intern must be extremely detail oriented, have a great deal of initiative and be an independent worker. The ideal candidate is interested in producing, directing and all aspects of how a play develops. 

Position(s): One full-time starting in September. Stipend available.

RICHARD TAYLOR: ‘IN GOD’S HAT’--“TERRIFIC”

Given that the laconic characters of “In God’s Hat” seldom waste their breath, it’s tempting to sum up the play with a single word: terrific. Still, the story begs for more description, if only to ponder why this noirish tale of loutish people feels so downright thrilling.

CARYL CHURCHILL: ‘LIGHT SHINING IN BUCKINGHAMSHIRE’ (REVIEW)

Caryl Churchill's remarkable 1976 play is too little known. Seizing on the millennial movements that erupted during the English civil war in the 1640s, it depicts the eternal battle between revolutionary idealism and political pragmatism. As Polly Findlay's revival reminds us, in its shift to modern dress, the play also deals with issues that still burn brightly today.
