THE NEW ELTON JOHN-LEE HALL MUSICAL: ‘ANIMAL FARM’

Elton John and Lee Hall, who wrote the musical Billy Elliot, are teaming up to create a new show based on George Orwell's Animal Farm.

Lee, who won Olivier and Tony awards for his book and lyrics for the stage Billy Elliot, and an Oscar nomination for the screen version, told me Orwell's novella was perfectly suited for the stage and pointed out that there are phrases such as 'All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others' that lend themselves to lyrics.

ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER, TIM RICE, ‘THE WIZARD OF OZ’

This can't be the right place, I think as I push the doorbell. I'm looking for Andrew Lloyd Webber, First Lord of the Theatre and composer of lush, romantic melodies, whose home is surely a mansion swathed in velvet and adorned with golden cherubs  -  not this dusty little town house round the back of Victoria Station. Can he really live here?

'Oh yes,' says a woman's voice on the intercom. 'Come in.'

The door clicks open... and it's astonishing, like entering another dimension. A huge, dark room, and in the gloom stand three beautiful human-sized angels, guarding the Holy Grail.

BEHAN BACK IN IRELAND

It receives a revival next week at the New Theatre, in Temple Bar in Dublin, in a production directed by Ronan Wilmot that pays tribute to the pioneering work of the Pike Theatre in staging the work for the first time, in 1954.

The Quare Fellow was Behan’s first stage play, and it premiered at the tiny 50-seat theatre on Herbert Lane, which was run by Alan Simpson and Carolyn Swift. The Quare Fellow drew on Behan’s experiences in prison, tuning into contemporary political debates about judicial hanging, which was still legal in Ireland and England at the time. But it also marked a radical experiment with the theatrical form. The Quare Fellow of the title, the condemned man, is the central character, but he never appears on stage. Behan himself provided the voice of the unseen prisoner who can be heard singing throughout the play (“And that old triangle / Went jingle jangle / Along the banks of the Royal Canal”).

SIMON STEPHENS ON TAKING PLAYS INTO PRISONS

The most memorable experience I've had watching one of my own plays wasn't at the National Theatre or in Manchester's Royal Exchange. It wasn't at the Traverse in Edinburgh or London's Royal Court or at the Kammerspiele Vienna, or the Deutsches Theater Berlin. It was in the converted gallows of Wandsworth jail, six years ago, watching my play Country Music, which is currently being revived and toured to prisons by West Yorkshire Playhouse.
